The dawn of cognitive technology

By , 28 November 2016 at 13:08

The era of digitalization has passed and given way to a new world model that is created, modified and related to the world of cognitive technology.

Digital transformation has not only changed the way millions of people behave, living with millions of lines of code and creating alter egos online, but it has also modified the way in which we see the world of business. It is not the destiny of millions of companies, but their foundations that operate under the paradigm of the startup universe.

If we think about it, the entry of the business world in the digital era means the minor detail of handling 2,500 million gigabytes of data every day. To get a conservative idea of this, it is all the information contained in 170 newspapers delivered to every living person on this planet. What is more, as this trend continues, figures from IBM indicate that in 2020 every human being will be capable of generating 1.7MB of information per second. To handle this amount of data, considering all the complexity, cognitive technology will be one of the leading factors in the coming years.

One of the ways to achieve it is the famous Watson system and its artificial intelligence. This has been recognised as the foundation of cognitive computing and has recently been updated to bring it up to scratch. The IBM system was first shown on an episode of Jeopardy! In 2011, where it was able to understand natural human language, answer complex questions and learn. This system is the starting point for millions of possibilities that leave the door open to all sectors: help for training guide dogs through cognitive technologies, smart crops that are more efficient and productive, faster and more precise diagnosis for diseases…

Analytics is one of these. To date, more than 80% of the data generated by humanity has been lost, and not only can we not recover this data, the truth is that we are incapable of analysing it. In this sense, one of the real applications that we can see is how bicycle lending services operate in a city, where data analysis can allows us to improve this clean efficient mode of transport in our major cities.

The copying and processing of data can also be apply to everything related with cloud technology. How do connected cars work? Especially the famous Car2Go, which can now be found everywhere in all the major cities of Europe, or Tesla cars. Safe driving systems and their interconnection will lower costs, reduce damage and above all, generate a stream of data that goes to the cloud. According to data from the European Commission, cloud computing is expanding at an incredible speed in Europe, as a way of enabling a traditional business to go digital and reach a value of 44,800 million euros in their forecasts for 2020.

It would also help to protect any vehicle from attacks or hacks. While it is true that adding technology to cars means more danger, it also increases protection. And why not, the total knowledge of the human brain; the reproduction of synaptic chips closely linked to quantum computers would create the possibility of reproducing the neuron activity of a human brain in a microchip, and this, in time, would be able to learn. There is nothing like a human being to inspire the best in technological progress.
