Professional Software Development and Big Data Analytics: New Master’s Degrees offered by Telefónica and U-Tad

By , 7 August 2015 at 17:44

Telefónica I+D, in collaboration with the U-Tad (Centre for Technology and Digital Art ascribed to the Camilo José Cela University), has organised the “Telefónica Master’s Degree in Advanced Software Development” and the “Master’s Degree in Big Data & Analytics”, which begins the coming month of October.

Both courses are postgraduate degrees, amounting to 600 hours each. Their goal is to train and specialise—with up-to-date knowledge and techniques—engineers, programmers and graduates, using the most advanced technical skills, applied to development, the management of high-quality, advanced software projects, and the analysis and visualisation of large amounts of data, for data-driven companies.

Students will also master core analysis skills, which are essential for all professional Data Scientists.

U-Tad has contributed its extensive experience in the field of advanced education to these postgraduate courses, in order to train the experts that the new digital economy requires. Telefónica I+D, on its part, provides its knowledge on professional profiles and the technological know-how that ICT companies and digital telcos expect from professionals in the sector.

TextThis collaboration has made it possible to develop two Master’s Degrees aimed at the real work world, connected with digital business.

These two specialisation fields had yet to be addressed as part of the Spanish educational offer. Students who finish these programmes will have the technical and professionals skills necessary to work in a leading digital telco such as Telefónica, or in other companies, start-ups, or as entrepreneurs, developing their own, innovative technological projects.

The involvement of Telefónica I+D in the design of these programmes, the selection of education professionals and the organisation of internships is also aimed at gaining and incorporating talented professionals—software technology specialists and programmers, as well as experts in Big Data—with the necessary training to work in digital telcos, and a skill-set focused on the creation of products and services.

By means of this initiative, Telefónica I+D contributes to the Training and Learning activities also carried out—for different purposes and from varying perspectives—by other organisations belonging to the Telefónica Group, such as Telefónica Digital Education and the Telefónica Foundation.

What skills are provided? The “Telefónica Master’s Degree in Advanced Software Development”, which is aimed at graduates in mathematics, physics, information technology engineering and other related fields, is made up of a first module on advanced programming techniques, and two technological specialisation modules, focused on clients and servers.

Throughout the first module, students receive training in software design and implementation: programming paradigms, advanced design and architecture standards, the design of data structures and algorithms, and methods and practices for software development. The client and server development modules provide knowledge on cutting-edge platforms and technologies for the development of digital products (HTML5, Android, iOS, FireFoxOS, NoSQL, node.js, etc.).

These modules are complemented with another module dealing with soft-skills (personal strategy, effective communication and inter-personal relations, leadership, co-working, engaging presentations, etc.), which provide key skills for students’ professional development in the digital age. Students taking the “Master’s Degree in Big Data & Analytics” will command, among other skills, distributed systems and their effects on operation and design processes. It also delves into distributed file systems such as HDFS; non-relation databases—noSQL—such as Cassandra, HBase or MongoDB; and information processing—batch processing and streaming—using frameworks such as Hadoop, Spark and Flink.

Students will also master core analysis skills, which are essential for all professional Data Scientists. They will be capable of applying them in advanced projects using exclusive datasets, both on an analytical level and via the interactive visualisation of large amounts of data.
