19 August 2014: Developers are often the unsung heroes behind the complex and wondrous tech shaping our world as we know it. We’ve seen some inconspicuous college dropout types surge to fame over the past decade, but who are the next coding stars to emerge? We’ve taken a look at a handful of programmers that could be set to disrupt our everyday lives with their technical capabilities:

1. Thomas Suarez @tomthecarrot

Everyone saw that Thomas Suarez TED talk right? At the tender age of 12, he learnt Python, Java and C ahead of building and later selling his own iPhone apps. Suarez, now 15, has also recently set up his own business called Carrot Corporation which makes apps for iOS, Android and Google Glass as well as setting out to revolutionize 3D printing.

2. Martha Chumo

This 19 year-old self-taught programmer from Kenya made the global headlines after she crowd funded a trip to attend Hacker School in New York before running into visa issues. The disappointed but determined Chumo then founded her own hacker school for girls in Nairobi. She said to CNN “The great thing about programming is that you get to do something new and not use the same old technology forever—that’s the fun part, and also being able to build anything that you can think of.”

3. Marko Calasan @CalasanMarko

Macedonian computer systems prodigy Marko Calasan, is noted for being the youngest certified computer systems administrator and computer systems engineer, feats achieved at age 8 and 9 respectively. The “Mini Mozart of Computers” also wrote a book on installation tasks for Microsoft Windows 7 which was given out to schools in Macedonia by the Ministry of Education.

4. Vitalik Buterin @vitalikbuterin

Russian-born Buterin is the co-creator of Etherum , a software platform for cryptographically-secure transactions which encompasses the Ether cryptocurrency (essentially the LEGO of cryptofinance). At only 20, he is known as one of the most prominent Bitcoin influencers – watch out world!

5. Nick D’Aloisio @nickdaloisio

This Australian-born British entrepreneur has already cashed in on his impressive coding abilities with the sale of Summly, his summarisation and artificial intelligence startup, to Yahoo in 2013 for $30 million. The 18 year-old was named “Innovator of the Year” by The Wall Street Journal and one of TIME magazine’s “Time 100” as one of the world’s most influential teenagers.
