Machine-to-machine (M2M) technology can make incredible things possible – and we’re taking some steps down this intriguing path. But we’re already seeing the availability of many solutions that may have previously seemed like a farfetched notion. Here we have selected five amazing things powered by M2M:

[Clever Doors] You don’t need keys if you have a smartphone. Some technologies now allow you to unlock your door via your smartphone, wherever you are. It can be very useful if you’re not at home and expecting an important delivery or if you have people visiting. Not to mention, when you’ve forgotten your keys – you won’t need to carry an extra set. Open Sesame…

[M2M Art] The complexity of life in an environment is captured in an installation titled Capacities: Real Time Complex – Connected Cities. Creator Stanza has won the Share Prize 2012 thanks to art made with M2M technology than monitors multiple changes in a city in real time.

[Smart Slippers] The elderly are usually prone and vulnerable to injuries caused from falls. Smart Slippers analyze and transmit stability information for real-time risk assessment.

[Smart Baby Clothes] We’re now seeing the availability of baby clothes with sensors that alert parents via text message when their little one needs to be changed. Machine washable, sleep garments that use embedded, non-contact ECG, skin temperature and movement sensors, help parents monitor their infant’s behavioural and emotional changes.

[Animal Tracking] And let’s close with a more amusing one. Farmers will be kept informed about their animal’s activity, including when the cow is most fertile (yes you read that right), thanks to the aptly titled Heat Phone.
